The list of major features shooting 3D with the EPIC's seems to be growing all the time. To pack a Raw 5K image with oodles of latitude and functionality into such a tiny package is simply incredible. These sort of technological advancements can only help set 3D free and get it out there into the grassroots. The upcoming Atom rig from Element Technica is purpose built for the EPIC cameras and from what it seems to me, for the price, this is going to be the setup to beat for Stereoscopic 3D. I'm a trained ET rig tech myself and the images of the Atom just look great. Very familiar and yet addressing all of the known issues with the Quasar. Going to have to stop by and check one out next time I'm in LA.

That's all I've got for awhile. 3 blog posts today. Maniac.

Holgaroid

Holgaroid

On our recent snow adventures, while I was firing away on the Mark 2, James was using a Holgaroid camera and some of his images are just too beautiful to not share. A Holga is a plastic, piece of crap medium format camera with a fixed plastic lens. The images it makes have a beautiful soft focus and a weird dreamy quality that's very unique. Polaroid instant film has its own weird and idiosyncratic qualities so put a Polaroid back onto a Holga camera and you have a very Frankensteinish analog image making tool. The film he had was also expired which adds another interesting variable to the mix. Enjoy.

Thanks, James, for letting me post these. Gorgeous stuff.

Here's another analog experiment we did a few years ago - a short film shot digitally through a medium format portrait camera.

Random Gotcha - 01/03/11

First gotcha of the new year. Don't let this happen to you.

These are corrupt frames resulting from a faulty 16GB RED compact flash card transfer. The media on the cards was fine but I found a few of these frames when auditing the files on the desktop after the transfer. Checked the original media on the cards and the corrupt frames were nowhere to be found. Re-transfered from the cards and the problem was solved. I've consulted a few RED gurus about this and apparently when the RED cards first come out of the camera and they're a bit hot to the touch, if you transfer right away you can get these bad frames. So f-n weird. R3D Manager will NOT alert you to these bad frames if you have them so despite the automatic checksum, the importance of auditing every single file out of the camera can't be understated. The things we learn..
